Since 2010 Nicaragua’s opposition have always been a minority

Nicaragua’s opposition often claim they had majority support in Nicaragua during their violent failed coup attempt of 2018. To the contrary, they have never had majority support since 2010 when President Ortega and his government team pulled Nicaragua out of the world recession with levels of growth only exceeded in neighboring countries by Panama.

M&R Consultants have proven over more than a decade that they are the most accurate and reliable opinion polling company in Nicaragua. They published two opinion surveys in May 2019 and September 2019 which included data tracking the development of approval for President Ortega and for the opposition.

Between 2010 and 2019 President Ortega’s level of disapproval never reached more than 38%, which was in September 2018, and by December 2018 over 50% of Nicaraguans thought his government was taking Nicaragua in the right direction. Currently his government has over 60% popular approval.

By contrast over 65% of people disapproved of Nicaragua’s opposition through 2018 and negative opinion of the Nicaraguan opposition subsequently never dropped below 53%, standing at over 60% by the end of 2019.
